Two visits that most visitors will never know exist

The Château de Versailles receives millions of visitors each year. The route most of them follow, through the State Apartments and out into the gardens, is extraordinary. But it is not the whole story. Two further visits exist, each requiring a special authorisation from the château and a guide who has completed the mandatory specialist training programme. Both are extensions of a classic Versailles day rather than tours booked on their own.

A note on access. Both visits are gated by the same accreditation, the Versailles Prestaguide specialist training, which is separate from the mandatory national licence of guide-conférencier required to guide anywhere in France. Not all licensed guides hold it, and fewer than forty in the country completed it in the first year it was offered. Pépin's founder holds this accreditation.

The Petits Appartements:
the private rooms

From a supplement confirmed at booking

Behind the ceremonial façade of the palace lies another Versailles. Smaller rooms, lower ceilings, more human in scale. This is where the king actually lived.

The State Apartments were designed for performance. Every detail, the height of the ceilings, the sequence of the rooms, the light, was calculated to project power. The Petits Appartements were designed for something else: privacy, comfort, the daily rhythm of court life away from ceremony.

These rooms include intimate dining rooms, private cabinets and spaces where access was a privilege reserved for a handful of courtiers. The special group ticket covers both the Petits and the Grands Appartements, the Hall of Mirrors and the State Apartments among them, with an introduction to Le Nôtre's gardens as part of the same visit. So nothing of the classic Versailles is given up, and the private rooms are added to it. It is also considerably calmer: very few groups at Versailles make this choice.

Exclusive Morning Access:
the Trianon Estate before the doors open

From a supplement confirmed at booking

May to September only · 10am to noon

The Trianon Estate normally opens to the public at noon. From 10am, a very small number of private groups are granted exclusive access to the entire domain, two hours before anyone else arrives.

The whole estate is included, in near-total privacy. The Grand Trianon, the pink marble retreat Louis XIV built to escape his own court, later lived in by Napoleon and by de Gaulle. The Petit Trianon, the private domain Louis XVI gave to Marie-Antoinette. And the Hameau de la Reine, the rustic hamlet she had built, one of the most extraordinary and most misunderstood places at Versailles. Morning light across the gardens, no queues, no crowds, no noise.

The château opened this programme in 2025, and it remains tightly limited. The visit is accompanied throughout by a member of the Versailles staff, who carries the keys and whose role is to unlock spaces that stay closed to the public even during normal opening hours. That is what makes the morning exceptional: not only the hour, but one location that the public simply cannot enter.

One exceptional space, chosen at booking

Grand Trianon: the private apartments
The Emperor's Apartments used by Napoleon I, or Trianon Sous Bois, the intimate rooms arranged by General de Gaulle. Not accessible during regular public visits.
Petit Trianon: the Queen's Theatre, or the King's private apartments
The theatre Marie-Antoinette had built for herself, or the King's private rooms in the Petit Trianon. Not accessible during regular public visits.
Hameau de la Reine: the Queen's House
The interior of the Queen's House, at the heart of the hamlet. Not accessible during regular public visits.

The three routes are offered subject to availability. The final choice of location is made by the Château de Versailles.

How these fit into a Versailles day

With the Petits Appartements added: the private rooms, the Grands Appartements and the gardens · ~3h
With the Petits Appartements added, or with the exclusive Trianon morning from 10am and the palace in the afternoon · full day

Pépin's advice

Ask early. Both visits depend on an authorisation granted by the château and on a guide who holds the accreditation. The number of slots is small, and they are taken well in advance, so the further ahead you write, the more likely the date works.

Give the Trianon a full day. The exclusive morning ends at noon, exactly as the public arrives. Carrying on into the palace and the gardens in the afternoon is what makes the early start worth it.

Keep the group small for the private rooms. The Petits Appartements are narrow and low-ceilinged, which is precisely their interest, and a smaller group moves through them far more comfortably.

Good to know

These two visits are extensions of a classic Versailles day, not tours booked on their own, so we build them into the half day or the full day with you. Both require an authorisation from the Château de Versailles, which is granted subject to availability and is never guaranteed at the point of enquiry. The exclusive morning at Trianon runs from May to September only. Where a choice of exceptional space is offered, the château makes the final decision on which one, and we confirm it with you as soon as we have it.
