Beyond the Public Tour
Two visits that most visitors will never know exist
Versailles receives millions of visitors a year, and almost all of them follow the same route: the State Apartments, the Hall of Mirrors, the gardens. That route is extraordinary, and it is not the whole palace. Two further visits exist, each gated by an authorisation from the château and by a guide who has completed its specialist training. Both are added to a classic Versailles day rather than booked on their own.
Or both, in one day
The two are not exclusive. The Trianon morning from 10am, then the palace in the afternoon with the King's private apartments: it is the fullest day Versailles allows, and the only way to see both sides of the estate behind closed doors. We request the two authorisations together, and both supplements apply: +€450 for the private apartments, +€1,900 for the Trianon morning.
Not sure which? The private apartments fit inside a half day and take nothing away from the classic visit. The Trianon morning is best given a full day: it ends at noon, and the palace and the gardens follow in the afternoon. Tell us who is travelling and how long you have, and we will say plainly which one we would book, whether both are worth it, and when neither is.
The private apartments:
where the king actually lived
The State Apartments were built to be seen. Every ceiling height, every sequence of rooms, every window was calculated to project power at whoever was walking through. Directly behind them, through a door most visitors never notice, is the other Versailles: smaller rooms, lower ceilings, daylight instead of gold, the apartments the kings built for themselves once the ceremony was over.
What you will see
The King's private rooms. The Petits Appartements, as the château calls them: the inner cabinets where Louis XV worked and kept his collections, the private dining rooms where a handful of guests were invited after the hunt, Louis XVI's library, and the small service rooms that tell you more about daily life at court than any state salon: how the king washed, ate, slept and escaped. Access is by authorisation only, in small numbers, and the rooms are quiet in a way the rest of the palace never is.
And the whole classic visit. The ticket covers the Grands Appartements as well: the State Apartments, the Hall of Mirrors, the Queen's Apartments, with an introduction to Le Nôtre's gardens in the same visit. Nothing of the standard Versailles is given up. The private rooms are added to it, and the contrast between the two is the whole point.

Ask early. The visit depends on an authorisation granted by the château and on a guide who holds the accreditation. The number of slots is small and they go well in advance, so the further ahead you write, the more likely your date works.
It works on a half day. The private rooms, the Grands Appartements and the gardens fit inside a normal half-day visit, in about three hours.
Exclusive morning access:
the Trianon Estate before it opens
The Trianon Estate opens to the public at noon. From 10am, a very small number of private groups are let into the entire domain, two hours before anyone else, accompanied by a member of the château staff who carries the keys. The château opened this programme in 2025 and has kept it tightly limited.
What you will see
The Grand Trianon. The pink marble retreat Louis XIV built to escape his own court, and the one building at Versailles that has never stopped being used: Napoleon lived here, and so did de Gaulle, who had it restored as a residence for visiting heads of state.
The Petit Trianon and the Hameau. The private domain Louis XVI gave to Marie-Antoinette, where she set her own rules and the court could not follow, and the Hameau de la Reine, the working hamlet she had built at the far end of the gardens: one of the most extraordinary and most misunderstood places in France.
And one space nobody else gets into. The staff member who accompanies the visit unlocks a room that stays closed even during normal opening hours. Which one depends on the day. Add to that the morning light across the gardens, no queues, no crowds, and, for two hours, an estate that is effectively yours.

The three routes are offered subject to availability. The final choice of location is made by the Château de Versailles.

Ask early. The morning depends on an authorisation granted by the château and on a guide who holds the accreditation. The slots are few and taken well in advance, so the further ahead you write, the more likely your date works.
Give it a full day. The morning ends at noon, exactly as the public arrives. Carrying on into the palace and the gardens in the afternoon is what makes the early start worth it, and it is the only way to see both halves of the estate properly.
You can have both. Nothing stops us adding the King's private apartments to the same day: the Trianon in the morning, the palace and its private rooms in the afternoon. It doubles the supplement, and it is the most complete day we can build at Versailles.

Neither visit is booked on its own. Each is added to a classic Versailles day, and the choice of day decides which one is possible.

- Both are extensions of a classic Versailles day, never tours on their own. We build one into your half day or full day with you. The two can also be taken on the same full day, in which case we request both authorisations together and both supplements apply.
- Authorisation
- Each visit requires an authorisation from the Château de Versailles, granted subject to availability and never guaranteed at the point of enquiry. It also requires a guide holding the Versailles specialist training.
- Season
- The private apartments run all year. The exclusive morning at Trianon runs from May to September only, from 10am to noon.
- The exceptional space
- At Trianon, the château makes the final decision on which closed room is opened for you. We confirm it as soon as we have it.
- Closing day
- The palace and the Trianon Estate close on Mondays, so neither visit runs that day.
