The same medieval streets, walked between the bakeries, the producers and the tables.
This is the Marais walked at the pace of a long morning, with the history still told along the way, but punctuated by what the neighbourhood actually eats. The Marais escaped Haussmann, which means its narrow streets and hidden courtyards survived, and so did the small food trades that fill them. We follow that thread on foot, stopping where it is worth stopping.
It is the same neighbourhood as our Le Marais walking tour, seen from a different angle. Where that walk is led by four centuries of history, this one is led by the tables, the counters and the producers, with the history woven in rather than centre stage.
The Marais is one of the few neighbourhoods in Paris where small, independent food trades have held their ground. Bakeries, fromagers, the long tradition of the rue des Rosiers, and a handful of producers most visitors pass without noticing. We move between a few of them across the morning, tasting as we go, with time to talk about what we are eating and where it comes from.
The exact stops shift with the season and the day, and we will confirm what is included when we plan the morning with you. What stays the same is the shape of it, a relaxed walk through a living neighbourhood, with enough to eat that lunch afterwards is optional.
The bakeries · the rue des Rosiers · the small producers
The food does not replace the neighbourhood, it walks you through it. We pass the Place des Vosges, the oldest planned square in Paris, push open a courtyard or two that look private but are not, and read the layers of the Marais, medieval, aristocratic, Jewish, into the streets as we go. The history is lighter here than on the walking tour, but it is still the reason the neighbourhood tastes the way it does.
Come hungry, within reason. There is enough tasting across the morning that a full breakfast beforehand is a mistake. Arrive with an appetite and you will not need lunch.
Tell us about allergies and preferences in advance. Vegetarian, kosher, gluten, anything at all. The earlier we know, the better we can shape the route around it.
Sunday morning is the Marais at its best. The streets of the old Jewish quarter are at their most alive early on a Sunday, and most of the food trades are open.
Good to know
This is an outdoor walk on old streets, with cobblestones in places, so comfortable shoes make all the difference. Tastings are arranged along the way, and we will confirm exactly what is included when we plan the morning with you. Individual shops keep their own opening days, so the precise stops may shift, but the walk is built so that something worthwhile is always open.
