The Left Bank, one tasting at a time

The oldest market street in Paris, the cheese and the cellars, at the pace of a long lunch.

The Left Bank fed students and scholars for eight centuries before it fed tourists, and the food trades that grew up around the old university are still there if you know where to look. This is the Quartier Latin walked around its tables, the market streets, the fromagers and the cellars, with the history of the neighbourhood told along the way rather than recited.

It is the same ground as our Latin Quarter walking tour, approached differently. Where that walk follows eight centuries of thinking in public, this one follows what the neighbourhood ate while it was thinking.

The food part

One of the oldest market streets in Paris runs through this neighbourhood, and around it sits a dense cluster of small food trades, bakers, cheesemongers, and the kind of cellars that have supplied the Left Bank for generations. We move between a few of them across the morning, tasting as we go, with time to understand what we are eating and why it belongs here.

The exact stops shift with the season and the day, and we will confirm what is included when we plan the morning with you. What stays the same is the rhythm of it, a relaxed walk through a working neighbourhood, with enough to eat that lunch afterwards becomes a choice rather than a necessity.

What you will also see

The food walks you through the neighbourhood rather than past it. We pass the edges of the Sorbonne, the streets where the medieval university took root, and the corner of Saint-Germain-des-Prés where the cafés argued philosophy over coffee that cost more than the ideas. The history is lighter here than on the walking tour, but it is the reason the Left Bank tastes the way it does.

Pépin's advice

Come hungry, within reason. There is enough tasting across the morning that a heavy breakfast is a mistake. Arrive with an appetite and lunch becomes optional.

Tell us about allergies and preferences in advance. Vegetarian, gluten, anything at all. The earlier we know, the better we can shape the route around it.

Mornings are best. The market street is at its liveliest and most itself before noon, when it is still serving the neighbourhood rather than the visitors.

Good to know

This is an outdoor walk, with some slopes and cobblestones, so comfortable shoes make all the difference. Tastings are arranged along the way, and we will confirm exactly what is included when we plan the morning with you. Individual shops keep their own opening days, so the precise stops may shift, but the walk is built so that something worthwhile is always open.
