Sainte-Chapelle &
La Conciergerie

The most extraordinary Gothic interior in Paris, and the prison that ended a monarchy

Sainte-Chapelle was consecrated in 1248 and built in seven years, an extraordinary feat for the thirteenth century, to house the Crown of Thorns that Louis IX had bought from the Emperor of Constantinople for three times the cost of the building itself. The chapel was an argument made in stone and glass: that Paris was the new Jerusalem, and the King of France its custodian. The windows make that argument still.

Two minutes away, on the same island and the same ticket, La Conciergerie is the oldest surviving part of the Capetian royal palace. Under the Revolution it became the seat of the revolutionary tribunal and the prison where more than two thousand seven hundred people were held before execution. Marie-Antoinette spent the final weeks of her life in a cell here. The medieval hall that remains is among the finest Gothic secular spaces in France.

We build the visit around Sainte-Chapelle and include the Conciergerie for those who want it. The two share one entrance ticket, so the second site adds nothing beyond the time it takes, roughly an hour, and our guides can trim or skip it to keep a tighter schedule.

What you will see

Sainte-Chapelle. One of the finest Gothic interiors in the world. The upper chapel holds stained glass from the thirteenth to the fifteenth century across some six hundred square metres, fifteen windows that carry more than a thousand scenes from the Bible and leave little of the wall to stone. On a clear day the effect is hard to describe and harder to forget. The Crown of Thorns that justified the whole building is no longer here; it has been kept at Notre-Dame since the nineteenth century, and the story of how a medieval king came to own it is remarkable in its own right.

La Conciergerie. The Salle des Gens d'Armes, built for the household of Philip the Fair, is the largest surviving Gothic hall in France. Turned prison during the Terror, it held Robespierre himself in the days before his own execution. Marie-Antoinette's cell, rebuilt as a chapel in the nineteenth century by the surviving daughter of Louis XVI, compresses a great deal of French history into a very small room.

Pépin's advice

Make the most of the Conciergerie. It sits on the same ticket as Sainte-Chapelle and two minutes from its door, so the only cost of adding it is about an hour of your morning. For anyone drawn to the French Revolution it is one of the most immediate historical spaces in Paris, and the Salle des Gens d'Armes, the largest surviving medieval hall in the country, is reason enough to step inside. It can be shortened on the day, but it rarely disappoints.

Pair it with Notre-Dame. Five minutes on foot separate the two, and the story carries across both. The Crown of Thorns was housed in this chapel, carried out of Notre-Dame on the night of the fire, and returned there after the reconstruction; the two buildings tell one history from opposite ends. A morning that takes in both is among the most rewarding things to do on the Île de la Cité, and our guides can arrange the pair as a single half-day at a better rate than booking them apart.

Good to know

Travel light. Sainte-Chapelle is reached through the Palais de Justice, an active court of law, and the security screening is thorough: an airport-style scanner, a bag check, and no exceptions. Large bags, liquids, and sharp objects will slow you down or be turned away at the gate, so it is best to leave bulky luggage at your hotel before you come.
